De Molen is a brewery in the North of Holland and is probably the most known brewery from the Netherlands due to the very particular beers that this brewery produces since decades. De Molen is a traditional brewery that does not focus on the design of its labels, and probably has the plainest labels you have ever seen. But don’t judge a book by its cover, as De Molen is in fact, known the world over for its very bold, dark beers, often referred to as the kings of the imperial stout. This particular beer is a very interesting smoked imperial stout and it’s name translates to English as “Heaven & Earth” [Brewer’s Note: Made with the most heavily peated malt in the world from the Scottish whiskey distillery in Bruichladdich. Almost pitch black and opaque, small head. Furiously peated aroma, hiding the malt, licorice and dark chocolate somewhat. Very full bodied, thick mouthfeel, like fluid bread. Dark chocolate, loads of peat, lapsang souchong (smoked) tea, chocolate cake, culminating in an almost endless aftertaste that also has licorice.] In other words, not for the faint hearted. The smokiness in the beer actually gives you a hint of bacon which is so surprising and absolutely wonderful if you’re into those sorts of tastes.
