Our citrus pale ale is approachable, moreish, and hauntingly good on any occasion. Originally brewed as a Halloween seasonal, interest lingered, like its lemony flavours, and it is now our best-selling beer. In the foggy past, patrons of The Bell Inn, our 600-year-old pub in Walberswick, told tall tales of ghostly ships that haunted the shore. The seeds of these stories were likely sown by smugglers trying to scare people away, but they later became the inspiration for everyone?s favourite eerie brew.

Tasting Notes: Ghost Ship is brewed with Pale Ale, Rye Crystal and Cara Malts which add depth and those moreish, biscuity hints we all know and love. A blend of Citra and other American hop varieties provide Ghost Ship's bold citrus flavours of lemon and lime, aromatic elderflower notes, and that famous hoppy finish.

Commercial description

At 4.5% abv, this Pale Ale has a good assertive pithy bitterness and a malty backbone. It is brewed with a selection of malts - Pale Ale, Rye and Cara – we use Citra, and a blend of other American hop varieties to create some great citrus flavours.

Ghost Ship is inspired by one of Adnams’ most haunted pubs in one of the UK’s most haunted villages, the Bell at Walberswick. The shores of Walberswick are littered with eerie wrecks of smuggling ships from a bygone era.

Ghost Ship was adapted from a recipe for Deathly Pale Ale. Ever heard of it? Well if you haven’t you’re not alone. Even the most avid Adnams fans would struggle with this one and with good reason, it never existed, or at least not officially. In 1975 a centenary ale was concocted with an Abv of around 9%. Unusually rather than simply call it Centenary ale it was decided it’s name would be Deathly Pale. The label was duly designed featuring a skull and crossbones, labels were printed and delivered to Adnams but at the last moment the label was pulled. Perhaps the label was too similar to the symbol for poison but whatever the reason new labels were quickly commissioned and the beer was renamed Centenary ale. A few hand labelled bottles of Deathly Pale did escape from the brewery, one of which sits in the cabinet at the Red Lion in Southwold. GOLDEN ALE/BLOND ALE
There are a few different types of blond ale. The first is the traditional "Canadian Ale", an adjunct-laden, macrobrewed, top-fermented equivalent of the American Standard. The second is common in US brewpubs - a light starter ale, with marginally more hop and body than a macrobrew, fewer adjuncts, but still not a flavourful beer by any means. The British interpretation is easily the boldest, hoppiest blond ale rendition. Some of these can almost be considered American Pales they are so hopped up - very crisp, refreshing, with relatively low alcohol compared with their North American counterparts.
