Adnams Ghost Ship

Adnams of Southwold have been around for years producing some of the finest traditional ales. In recent years they’ve been undergoing something of a renaissance with some fantastic craft-minded beers. This is latest release of theirs is move into uncharted territory: it’s alcohol free, but it’s also very much on the traditional end of things. Ghost Ship Alcohol Free takes their seminal Ghost Ship and drags it very much into the 21st Century. It pours copper-gold and the aroma is sweet bready malts along with a little citrus goodness. The flavour is traditional pale ale, with bready malts, citrus and a lovely traditional bitter finish. Not all alcohol free beers have to be lager or craft! Here’s to the traditional side of things, without the booze!

Adnams Ghost Ship is a pale ale that’s been brewed with a selection of Pale Ale, Rye Crystal and Cara malts, along with American hop varieties like Columbus and Centennial. These ingredients combine to create a distinctly citrusy flavour that, according to the brewery, tastes great when accompanied with spicy food, pizza or summer salad. Beer connoisseurs will be interested to know that this brew won a bronze medal at the International Brewing Awards in 2013.  Launched as a Halloween beer in 2010, the beer was created to be light in colour but with a little more sweetness and body than you’d expect. Ghost Ship gets its name from the 600 year old haunted pub that is owned by Adnams. There’s nothing ghostly about this beer though; the Sunday Telegraph called it “a decent drop”. About Time called it “a well-rounded beer with hearty biscuit flavours, citrus aromas and enough Citra and American hop varieties to create a truly hoppy refreshment."How many units are in a pint of Ghost Ship? Great question - there are 2.6 units in a pint of this pale ale. Is Ghost Ship alcohol free? This is the original Ghost Ship and it’s not classed as alcohol free. The percentage of alcohol in this brew is 4.5%, but drinkers should be aware that Ghost Ship does also come in a low alcohol variety (Ghost Ship Alcohol Free 0.5%). Ghost Ship is inspired by one of Adnams’ most haunted pubs in one of the UK’s most haunted villages, the Bell at Walberswick. A pale ale which started as a seasonal Halloween beer has now become a year round core beer and is now available on PerfectDraft.

At 4.5%, you will pick up notes of biscuit, caramel & toffee from the malts, which marry perfectly with the Citra hops and American hops used in the brewing process. Expect the flavours of lemon, lime and elderflower which finish off with the caramel and biscuit flavours of the malt.
