This formidable Imperial Stout commands attention with its massive presence, born from extensive maturation in Ledaig Whisky casks from the Isle of Mull. The sensory experience is dominated by an uncompromising peaty monster character, weaving thick threads of medicinal peat smoke through a dense tapestry of roasted grains. Decadent layers of bittersweet chocolate and espresso-like coffee emerge from the dark malt base, softened by whispers of barrel-derived vanilla and seasoned oak. At 11.3% ABV, it offers a sophisticated alcoholic warmth that carries the intense smoky and roasted flavors into a long, lingering finish. It is a bold, complex exploration of Islay-style intensity meeting rich malt depth.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (SRM 40+). Features a thick, deep tan to dark brown head with moderate retention and oily lacing. High viscosity is evident through slow-moving legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity. Dominant aromas of heavy peat smoke, medicinal phenols, and earthy campfire are layered over rich dark chocolate, roasted coffee, and scorched grain. Secondary notes include vanilla, toasted oak, and a subtle dark fruit ester profile resembling raisins or prunes. A smooth, clean alcohol presence is noticeable.
Taste. Initial impression is an intense wave of peaty whisky and medicinal smoke. The mid-palate reveals deep bittersweet chocolate and heavy-roasted coffee beans. Malt sweetness is present but restrained by firm roasted bitterness and wood tannins. The Ledaig barrel contribution is profound, offering oak-driven vanilla and earthy peat. Finishes long and warming with a lingering bittersweet cocoa and smoky aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied, viscous, and chewy with a velvety, mouth-coating texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated, lacking any harsh solvent notes.
