This massive Imperial Stout, a collaboration with Voodoo Brewing, presents a masterclass in barrel integration. At 14.1% ABV, the bourbon barrel aging introduces a profound depth of character, leading with aromas of charred oak and rich vanilla. The palate is saturated with decadent layers of molasses and burnt brown sugar, complemented by notes of milk chocolate and dark fruits like raisins and plums. A prominent freshly brewed espresso character provides a roasty counterpoint to the barrel-derived sweetness. It is a viscous, complex experience where the spirit-forward warmth melds seamlessly with a deep, bittersweet malt backbone, leaving a lingering, luxurious finish.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (40+ SRM). It features a thin, dark tan head with low retention, as is common for very high-gravity barrel-aged beers, leaving viscous legs upon swirling.
Aroma. High intensity with a rich blend of freshly brewed espresso, bittersweet chocolate, and heavy bourbon-soaked oak. Prominent notes of vanilla and molasses are layered with dark fruit esters of figs and prunes, accompanied by a clean, warming alcohol presence.
Taste. An intense mix of roast and sweetness. Initial impressions of burnt brown sugar and milk chocolate give way to deep molasses and dark fruit. The middle is dominated by espresso roast and toasted oak, while the finish is moderately sweet and warming with a lingering bittersweet chocolate aftertaste. Bitterness is firm but well-balanced by the massive malt body.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied, chewy, and viscous with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present and well-integrated, lacking any harsh or solventy edges.
