Intense aromas of English toffee, molasses, and rich vanilla rise from the glass, underpinned by the deep, spiritous notes of bourbon barrel-aging. On the palate, a luscious malt complexity delivers flavors of dark dried fruits—think raisins and dates—intertwined with toasted oak and a hint of vinous sherry. The massive scale of this ale is felt through a viscous, warming texture that coats the tongue, finishing with a lingering sweetness and a refined, wood-derived dryness that balances the high-gravity malt profile.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to dark reddish-brown. Clarity is clear to slightly hazy with age. The light tan head is minimal and dissipates quickly, leaving little to no lacing, which is common in extremely high-ABV barrel-aged beers.
Aroma. High intensity. Dominated by a complex blend of toffee, dark treacle, and rich molasses. The bourbon barrel contributes strong vanilla and charred oak notes. Pronounced fruity esters suggest dried figs, plums, and a vinous, port-like character from the solera process. Significant but smooth alcohol presence is evident.
Taste. Initial impression is of intense, luscious malt sweetness featuring caramel and nut-like depth. Mid-palate reveals dark fruit and raisin layers balanced by bourbon-soaked oak and vanilla bean. Bitterness is low, serving only to prevent cloying sweetness. The finish is long and warming, showing oxidative nuances of fine Sherry or Madeira alongside a hint of barrel tannin.
Mouthfeel. Full and remarkably viscous, with a chewy, palate-coating body. Carbonation is low, enhancing the beer's silkiness. Alcohol warmth is prominent and expansive, though well-integrated for such a high gravity. Very low astringency from the oak.
