Sudden Death Brewing Co. High Voltage is a striking Double IPA that masterfully balances immense tropical intensity with a velvety, juicy texture. Massive dry-hop additions of Vic Secret and Mosaic BBC unleash a vibrant burst of ripe pineapple, passionfruit, and dark berry aromas, contrasted elegantly by the dank, resinous undertones of Columbus hops. A heavy addition of oats creates a lush, creamy mouthfeel that carries the intense hop flavors smoothly across the palate. Despite its robust strength, this double dry-hopped powerhouse remains delightfully drinkable, finishing with a soft, clean bitterness and a lingering, resinous fruit character.
Appearance. Hazy, light orange-gold (SRM 6-8) with a persistent, dense, fluffy white head that leaves rich, sticky lacing on the glass.
Aroma. High to pungent intensity, bursting with tropical fruit notes of passionfruit and pineapple, mixed berries, and soft stone fruits. A prominent dank, piney, and resinous herbaceous undertone grounds the fruit, while a low, sweet, bready oat aroma provides a neutral, soft malt background.
Taste. An immediate rush of sweet tropical and citrus hop flavors, featuring bright pineapple, blueberry, and orange peel, transitioning into a dank, resinous resin finish. The malt character is soft, grainy, and doughy, providing a gentle canvas. Bitterness is moderately high but smooth and rounded, balancing the light residual sweetness. The finish is medium-dry and resinous, with a long, clean, fruity aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full, exceptionally soft, creamy, and pillowy on the palate due to the high proportion of oats. Carbonation is moderate. A gentle, smooth alcohol warmth is present, cleanly integrated without any harsh solvent character or hop-derived astringency.
