Named after the majestic Himalayan peak, Makalu is a Hazy IPA that reaches sensory heights through a deliberate blend of Strata, Waimea, and Hallertau Blanc hops. This combination yields a vivid aromatic profile defined by lush pineapple and ripe nectarine, transitioning into a palate reminiscent of an orange creamsicle. While the body is rich and smooth—hallmarks of the style—it maintains an approachable 6.8% ABV. The Hallertau Blanc contributes a sophisticated vinous touch, while the Strata and Waimea drive the intense tropical core. It concludes with a surprisingly dry finish that balances the intense, juicy fruit character without excessive bitterness, ensuring high drinkability despite its complexity.
Appearance. Pours a luminous pale gold to light orange (approx. 5 SRM) with a characteristic opaque haze and a beautiful 'shine.' It is topped by a dense, meringue-like white head with excellent persistence and intricate lacing.
Aroma. High intensity hop-forward aroma featuring prominent notes of sweet pineapple, nectarine, and a distinct orange citrus reminiscent of a creamsicle. Subdued, clean bready malt sits in the background, supporting the tropical fruit esters without any caramel or toast presence. Free of any sulfur or harsh grassy notes.
Taste. Initial impression is a burst of juicy tropical fruits, led by pineapple and stone fruit. The middle palate reveals an orange creamsicle character supported by a soft, grainy malt backbone. Bitterness is low to moderate, providing just enough structure to balance the fruitiness. It finishes notably dry and clean, leaving a lingering, pleasant impression of nectarine and citrus without any hop harshness.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a remarkably smooth, soft texture that avoids being heavy or cloying. Carbonation is moderate, enhancing the fruity lift. A subtle, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present at 6.8% ABV, but the finish remains crisp and free of any astringency or raw starch texture.
