Surely Simple Things have brewed a barleywine before? No? They seem like a brewery that’s set up for making this style of beer. It’s got a malty, breakfast cerealy, chocolatey base like liquidised KitKats, and over the top there’s ripe caramelised pineapple flavours. Perfect for a cold winter’s evening.
Simple Things say “We’ve gone for a modern/American take on the style so it’s relatively easy drinking compared to more traditional British examples but no less intense and rewarding. There’s a solid malt foundation, as any Barley Wine should have – it’s in the name, right?! We love Maris Otter and use it in most of our beers, and here it is in full effect, adding robust unctuousness in the form of sweet cereal and toffee notes. El Dorado, Calypso, Citra and Mosaic hops take this jammy sweetness and run with it, lending equally bold lush tropical fruit flavours and an all-important bitterness to keep everything well balanced and deliciously drinkable.
“We brewed this back in May so it’s had a good six months conditioning already, allowing things to mellow slightly and the various elements to meld and blend. It’s can conditioned so should age well.”
