This Double IPA is a high-intensity showcase of a specific Riwaka hop lot, delivering a saturated sensory experience centered on tropical brightness and deep resinous undertones. An explosion of grapefruit-passionfruit brightness dominates the senses, driven by a concentrated thiol profile. This fruity intensity is layered against a distinctive diesel-dankness and resinous complexity unique to this New Zealand variety. Despite the robust 8.4% ABV, the beer maintains a lean, supportive malt structure that allows the hop character to remain the sole focus. The finish is crisp and dry, highlighting a firm bitterness and a lingering, multifaceted hop presence that transitions from tropical fruit to earthy dankness.

Appearance. Pours a deep gold to light orange with a moderate-sized, persistent white head. Shows good clarity, though a very slight hop haze is present due to the heavy dry-hop load.

Aroma. Intense hop aroma featuring a complex blend of grapefruit, passionfruit, and tropical thiols. These fruit notes are balanced by a prominent resinous, diesel-like dankness. Background malt is clean and neutral, with a very low, smooth alcohol presence.

Taste. High hop flavor echoes the aroma with punchy passionfruit and citrus zest. A firm, moderately high bitterness is present but remains smooth and devoid of harshness. The malt character is low and unobtrusive, providing just enough support for the hop intensity. Finishes dry and clean with a long-lingering aftertaste of dank resin and tropical fruit.

Mouthfeel. Medium-bodied with a smooth, velvety texture. Carbonation is medium-high, providing a crisp bite that accentuates the dry finish. A light, pleasant alcohol warmth is noticeable but well-integrated.

Our friend Kem Eggers harvested a particularly Riwaka-y lot of Riwaka (ESH1) that he had tested for thiols; of the total thiols contained 38.5% were "Unidentified." He sent each of our breweries boxes of it for a pure single-lot expression of one of our favorite hops!
