Doodlebug presents a contemporary take on the Double IPA, leaning into a luscious, creamy texture derived from a heavy addition of oats and lactose. The sensory profile is dominated by a complex, layered hop architecture featuring Sabro, HBC 472, and Citra Cryo. These hops deliver an intense bouquet of toasted coconut, cedar, and bright tropical citrus. On the palate, the sweetness of the lactose supports a saturated hop oil presence, balancing the firm bitterness with flavors of ripe mango and lime zest. It finishes smooth and plush, with a well-integrated alcohol warmth that highlights its strength without being harsh.
Appearance. Deep gold to pale orange (7-9 SRM) with a pronounced, permanent haze. It pours with a thick, frothy off-white head that exhibits excellent retention and leaves dense lacing.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma leads with distinctive notes of coconut, vanilla, and woody cedar from the Sabro and HBC 472. This is brightened by Citra Cryo's punchy grapefruit and passion fruit character. A background of bready, grainy malt and a hint of sweet creaminess from the lactose provides a supportive, soft base.
Taste. Initial impression is a burst of tropical fruit and coconut cream. The flavor profile is saturated with Sabro's lime and coconut notes, complemented by HBC 472's subtle oaky nuances. Citra Cryo adds layers of tangerine and citrus peel. Bitterness is firm but rounded by the soft, silky malt bill and lactose sweetness. The finish is long and resinous, yet clean.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a notable creaminess and velvet-like texture. Carbonation is moderate, providing enough lift to prevent the lactose from becoming cloying. A gentle, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, commensurate with its 8% ABV.
