Ridgeway Imperial Russian Stout is a masterclass in the traditional, aged interpretation of the Imperial Stout. At 10% ABV, it commands attention with a deep, vinous complexity born from extended maturation. This profile leans into a sharp, almost wine-like character with a subtle nod toward the complexity of a lambic, though without overt sourness. Intensely roasty notes of dark chocolate and espresso dominate the palate, supported by a firm, lingering bitterness that has mellowed into a sophisticated harmony. It is a bold, velvety experience that bridges the gap between a robust strong ale and a fine port, offering a chewy, sophisticated finish.

Appearance. Jet black and opaque (SRM 40+). It pours with a dense, dark tan head that shows moderate retention. High alcohol and significant viscosity are visible as slow-moving legs on the glass.

Aroma. High intensity with a rich, complex blend of roasted grain, bittersweet chocolate, and black licorice. Strong esters suggest dark fruits like raisins and prunes, intertwined with a distinct vinous, port-like character. Hop aroma is very low, allowing the deep malt and smooth alcohol to lead.

Taste. Initial impression is intensely roasty and bittersweet. Flavors of burnt grain and dark cocoa are prominent, followed by a sharp, vinous tang that differentiates it from standard stouts. High bitterness provides a firm backbone but remains balanced by the massive malt weight. The finish is long, dry, and warming with a lingering roasty aftertaste.

Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A smooth, gentle alcohol warmth is persistent but well-integrated, never becoming hot or solventy.

Imperial Russian Stouts historically tend to be declared in the range of 9 to 10% alcohol by volume, at 10% Ridgeway’s is at the top of that range. What differentiates the style from simply a strong stout or porter is that extended ageing and perhaps a little judicious “infection” before bottling which makes them considerably more vinous and sharp than an export stout so there is MUCH more of a wine character than you normally get in a strong ale. Not soured but just that little nod towards a lambic beer. Very roasty and very bitter. That bitterness mellows over time in the bottle but if you are lucky enough to get an Imperial Russian on draught it will be full on. The style is not intended to be overtly hoppy once settled but obviously with so many hops used the draught experience will have something on the hop front that won’t be there in a bottled version.

Ridgeway’s Russian Imperial Stout will be brewed once a year. A small number of numbered bottles will be made available for you to enjoy immediately or to lay down for a while.
