Ridgeway Brewing Very Bad Elf

This English-inspired Winter Seasonal Beer presents a rich, malt-forward profile rooted in an 18th-century recipe. The use of ancient pale malt drives a deep sensory experience characterized by distinctive nutty and sweet-roasted notes. Rare Fuggles hops contribute a soft, rounded bitterness and subtle earthy undertones that balance the sturdy 7.5% ABV without overwhelming the palate. The character is reminiscent of an English Winter Warmer, offering a harmonious blend of caramel sweetness, toasted grain, and a gentle, integrated alcohol warmth. It is a satisfying and highly drinkable seasonal ale that emphasizes historical malt depth over aggressive spicing.
Appearance. Deep copper to reddish-brown (SRM 16–22). Excellent clarity with a thick, persistent off-white to tan head that leaves consistent lacing on the glass.
Aroma. Moderate to high intensity featuring prominent nutty, toasted, and biscuity malt. Subtle layers of caramel and dark fruit like plum or raisin are present. Hop aroma is low to moderate, displaying the classic earthy, herbal, and slightly woody character of Fuggles. Clean fermentation with very low fruity esters.
Taste. The initial impression is of rich, sweet-roasted malt and toasted nuts. Middle palate reveals hints of toffee and bread crust. The hop bitterness is soft and rounded, providing just enough balance to prevent cloying sweetness. The finish is smooth and moderately full, with a lingering nutty aftertaste and a clean, well-integrated alcohol presence. No harsh roasted or burnt notes are present.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a noticeable malty chewiness. Carbonation is moderate. A smooth, supportive alcohol warmth is evident but never sharp or fusel. Texture is creamy and rounded with no detectable astringency.
