Pulfer Brewery Dread Night
Dread Night is a vibrant Hazy IPA that leads with an intense bouquet of tropical fruit and citrus. The interplay of Citra and Motueka hops delivers lush notes of mango, lime, and grapefruit, while Nelson Sauvin adds a sophisticated layer of white grape and a distinctively spicy, crushed-gooseberry edge. Despite its juicy reputation, this beer presents a refined, dry finish and a silky texture that enhances drinkability. The malt profile remains supportive and bready, allowing the complex Southern Hemisphere and American hop profiles to dominate. It is a balanced, aromatically explosive expression of the style, blending creamy softness with a refreshing, bitterish snap.
Appearance. Straw to light gold (4-6 SRM) with a significant, opaque haze that gives a luminous glow. Topped by a dense, meringue-like white head with excellent retention and thick lacing.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring ripe passion fruit, lime zest from the Motueka, and the signature white wine and gooseberry character of Nelson Sauvin. Background notes of sweet orange and grapefruit from Citra. Malt is low, providing a clean, grainy, and slightly bready foundation. Esters are fruity and well-integrated.
Taste. Immediate burst of tropical fruit and bright citrus. The Motueka provides a mojito-like lime quality, complemented by the spicy, vinous notes of Nelson Sauvin. Malt flavor is low, primarily neutral grain. Bitterness is moderate but smooth, never harsh. The finish is notably dry for the style, with a lingering citrus peel and spicy hop aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a silky, smooth texture. Carbonation is moderate. Light alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated. No astringency or hop burn, providing a soft, rounded mouthfeel.
