This formidable Double IPA is a singular celebration of the Nelson Sauvin hop, delivering an intense sensory experience defined by crushed white grapes and tart gooseberry. The aroma is dominated by these distinctive New Zealand hop notes, supported by a clean, neutral malt base that allows the complex fruit character to shine. On the palate, a bold, structured bitterness balances the slight sweetness of the 8.2% alcohol, leading into a dry, lingering finish with nuances of passionfruit and cold-pressed Sauvignon Blanc. It is a potent, hop-forward ale that highlights the grape-like elegance of its namesake hop within a powerful, high-gravity framework.
Appearance. Deep gold to light orange-copper in color (SRM 7-10). It displays a moderate-sized, persistent, off-white head with excellent lacing. Clarity is brilliant with no significant yeast haze.
Aroma. High-intensity hop aroma featuring prominent white wine, gooseberry, and tropical fruit notes. A supportive, clean, neutral grainy maltiness sits in the background. Fermentation is clean with a very light, smooth alcohol note.
Taste. Initial impression is a burst of white grape and passionfruit hop flavors. Malt flavor is low and unobtrusive, providing a soft, bready foundation. Bitterness is high but well-integrated and lacks harshness. The finish is dry and medium-dry with a long, lingering hoppy aftertaste of crushed grapes and subtle pine.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, velvety texture. Carbonation is medium-high, providing a crispness that cuts through the gravity. A restrained, smooth alcohol warmth is present but not solventy.
