Blizzard King is a striking Specialty IPA that masterfully balances a dark aesthetic with a bright, hop-forward soul. The sensory experience is defined by a heavy dry-hopping of Mosaic, which contributes vivid layers of blueberry, tropical mango, and resinous pine. Despite its deep coloration, the beer maintains the refreshing drinkability of a Black Pale Ale, avoiding heavy roasted acridity in favor of subtle notes of cocoa and toasted crust. The palate is clean and crisp, allowing the complex fruit esters of the hops to shine against a backdrop of restrained, debittered malts and a firm, lingering bitterness.
Appearance. Deep ebony to black (35-40 SRM); opaque under most light with a persistent, creamy tan head that leaves fine lacing on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring prominent blueberry, tangerine, and tropical stone fruit from the Mosaic dry-hopping. A very low malt background provides suggestions of milk chocolate and light toast without any ashy or burnt character.
Taste. Initial impression is hop-centric with mango and citrus flavors leading into a resinous mid-palate. Malt flavors are supportive and smooth, offering light cocoa and toasted grain. Bitterness is firm and assertive (roughly 55-65 IBU context), leading to a dry, clean finish with a lingering berry-like hop aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light to medium body with a smooth, non-astringent texture. Moderate carbonation provides a crisp bite, while the 5.5% ABV offers only a very light, well-integrated warmth.
