This sophisticated Imperial Stout offers a masterclass in barrel integration, having rested for nearly three years in Rittenhouse Rye Whisky and Calvados barrels. The extended aging creates a velvety tapestry of dark chocolate and espresso, heightened by the addition of barrel-aged coffee and toasted coconut. A delicate dusting of cinnamon provides a warming spice that bridges the gap between the peppery rye and the bright, orchard-fruit essence of the Calvados. Rich, vinous, and profoundly complex, it balances intense roasted malts with a lingering, decadent finish of vanilla, oak, and dried dark fruits like raisins and plums.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque. Pours with a thick, creamy, deep tan head that shows moderate retention. Distinct legs are visible on the glass, indicating high viscosity and alcohol content.
Aroma. High intensity. Deeply roasted malt with notes of dark chocolate and espresso coffee. Significant barrel character presents as spicy rye, vanilla, and a hint of apple brandy. Toasted coconut and aromatic cinnamon provide a sweet, spicy layer, complemented by dark fruit esters like raisins and prunes.
Taste. An initial impression of rich, bittersweet chocolate and bold coffee. Mid-palate reveals layers of toasted coconut creaminess and sharp cinnamon spice. The barrel influence is prominent, offering spicy oak and a vinous, Calvados-driven fruitiness. Moderate bitterness from roasted grains balances the residual sweetness. The finish is long and warming with a lingering cocoa and spice aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied, chewy, and exceptionally luscious with a velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A smooth, gentle alcohol warmth is noticeable but well-integrated, reflecting its long aging period. No harshness or astringency.
