Petrus Roodbruin - Oud Bruin

Sour Ale 5.5 º 17 IBU
Petrus Roodbruin is a quintessential Oud Bruin, masterfully blending two-year-old Petrus Aged Pale with a young, toasted malt brown ale. Visually striking with an intense reddish-brown hue, it opens with a complex aroma of dark cherries and raisins layered over caramel and toffee. The palate features a delicate sweet-and-sour interplay; the oak foeder-aged portion provides a clean lactic tang that cuts through the rich, bready sweetness of the young malt base. Hints of plum and subtle wood tannin lead to a smooth, dry finish, showcasing the refined balance of Brouwerij De Brabandere’s traditional blending process and distinctive foeder character.
Appearance. Deep reddish-brown to dark copper (approximately 18–22 SRM). Good clarity with a light tan, creamy head that displays moderate retention and fine lacing.
Aroma. Moderate to high intensity featuring rich malt notes of caramel and toasted bread. Pronounced fruity esters suggest black cherries, plums, and raisins. A distinct but refined lactic sourness is present, complemented by a faint hint of oak from the aged components. Hop aroma is absent.
Taste. A balanced sweet-and-sour profile where initial dark caramel and burnt sugar flavors are met by a refreshing lactic acidity. Complexity is enhanced by flavors of dried fruit, particularly dates and prunes. Hop bitterness is low and restrained, allowing the malt and sourness to lead. The finish is clean with a lingering, pleasant fruity tartness and no acetic harshness.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with moderate carbonation. Smooth on the palate with no discernible astringency and a subtle, well-integrated alcohol presence.
