This Imperial Stout represents the absolute limit of malt extraction, utilizing a quintuple mash and a massive quantity of Rye Malt to achieve a singular, syrup-like density. The sensory experience is dominated by an ultra-viscous, pudding-like texture that coats the palate with layers of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and spicy earthiness. Intense aromas of black currants and charred grain meld with a significant but smooth alcohol presence. The heavy use of Rye Malt provides a distinctive peppery backbone, cutting through the dense residual sweetness. It is a decadent, motor-oil-black liquid that redefines the boundaries of body and intensity in the style.
Appearance.Jet black and completely opaque (40+ SRM). Pours with a thick, creamy, deep tan head that shows moderate retention. Extremely high viscosity is evident by the heavy legs and staining of the glass.
Aroma.High intensity with a complex blend of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and black licorice. The Rye Malt contributes a notable spicy, earthy character that mingles with dark fruit esters of prunes and raisins. Alcohol is noticeable but smooth, carrying a hint of molasses and toasted bread.
Taste.Massive initial impression of dark chocolate and roasted coffee. The mid-palate is dominated by the spicy, peppery bite of rye, which balances the intense malt sweetness. Hop bitterness is firm and aggressive but necessary to counter the high residual sugars. The finish is long and lingering with notes of charred grain, dark fruit, and a warming, vinous alcohol presence.
Mouthfeel.Extremely full-bodied, chewy, and luscious with a viscosity comparable to custard. Carbonation is low, enhancing the velvety texture. A significant and pleasant alcohol warmth is present without being harsh or solventy.
