Reflecting a luxurious approach to the Imperial Stout style, this vintage release envelops the senses in a deep, comforting warmth. It leads with dominant, highly integrated aromas of freshly roasted espresso beans and rich, bittersweet dark chocolate. This dark, velvety elixir balances intense roasted malts with a broad undercurrent of dark plums and subtle black currants. Beautifully smooth on the palate, it delivers a harmonious interplay of dark specialty malts and a firm, grounding bitterness that keeps the decadent, high-gravity profile exceptionally balanced, finishing with a lingering, warming, and sophisticated touch.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque. Pours with a dense, persistent dark brown head that exhibits excellent retention and leaves thick sheets of lacing on the glass. Pronounced viscosity is visible as slow-forming legs upon swirling (SRM 40).
Aroma. High intensity. Dominated by comforting aromas of fresh-brewed coffee and fine dark chocolate. Beneath the roast, subtle notes of black licorice, toasted dark malts, and low dark fruit esters of prunes and raisins emerge. Alcohol is noticeable but smooth and well-integrated, without any hot or solvent-like character. Low earthy hop notes.
Taste. An intense initial impression of bittersweet dark chocolate and heavy espresso roast. The robust malt profile supports layers of dark bread, cocoa, and light molasses. Medium-high bitterness provides structural balance against the initial sweetness. Dark fruit esters of plum and black currant weave through the mid-palate. Finishes moderately dry with a lingering, complex aftertaste of roasted grain, refined dark chocolate, and pleasant alcohol warmth.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied, thick, and chewy with a luxuriously smooth and velvety texture. Low to moderate carbonation enhances the rich, creamy weight. A gentle, deep alcohol warmth is highly noticeable but beautifully integrated, providing comfort without any harsh astringency.
