Lagunitas IPA India Pale Ale
This quintessential American IPA delivers a classic West Coast sensory experience defined by a robust and layered hop profile. Bright citrus and pungent pine notes from Cascade, Centennial, and Chinook hops lead the charge, while a splash of Simcoe adds a complex, resinous depth and hints of tropical fruit. The strategic use of Caramel Malt provides a necessary toasted sweetness and a rich, honeyed backbone that effectively balances the firm bitterness. The result is a highly drinkable, well-rounded ale where the aggressive hop 'twang' is tempered by a smooth, bready richness, finishing crisp with a lingering grapefruit zest and floral aftertaste.
Appearance. Color is a deep gold to light reddish-amber (8-10 SRM). It features a medium-sized, off-white head with excellent persistence and significant lacing on the glass. The clarity is brilliant.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring prominent notes of grapefruit, resinous pine, and floral blossoms. A moderate support of sweet, grainy maltiness is present, characterized by light caramel and toasted bread. The fermentation profile is clean with only a very subtle background of fruity esters.
Taste. The initial impression is decidedly hop-forward. Medium-high hop flavors of citrus rind and pine needles dominate, supported by a medium-low malt presence of caramel and toasted grain. The bitterness is firm and high but remains well-integrated. The finish is medium-dry and clean, leaving a lingering hoppy, bitter aftertaste that invites another sip.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly oily texture. Carbonation is moderate-high, providing a crisp sensation. There is a very light, smooth alcohol warmth consistent with its 6.2% ABV, with no perceptible astringency or harshness.
