This Imperial Flanders Red Ale presents a sophisticated, vinous character amplified by twelve months of aging in red wine barrels. The sensory profile is dominated by an intense bouquet of black cherries, red currants, and plums, supported by a sturdy malt foundation of toasted bread and a hint of chocolate. The elevated strength of this version adds a plush layer of complexity, where the characteristic lactic and soft acetic tartness meets elegant oak tannins and grape-skin notes from the wood. It finishes remarkably dry and crisp, with a gentle alcoholic warmth that enhances the overall wine-like impression of this multifaceted Belgian-style ale.
Appearance. Deep burgundy to reddish-brown in color with excellent clarity. Pours with a pale tan head that shows moderate retention and fine lacing.
Aroma. High intensity of dark fruits including black cherry, plum, and red currant. A complex sourness presents with both lactic and soft acetic notes, complemented by toasted malt, red wine, and subtle oak-derived vanilla. No hop aroma is present.
Taste. Initial impression is sharply tart and fruity, featuring intense cherry and berry flavors. A moderately-high toasty malt backbone provides balance against the vibrant acidity. Notable red wine barrel influence contributes tannins and a vinous structure. Bitterness is low, as the balance is driven by acidity. The finish is dry, lingering with fruit esters and a refined oak character.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a prickly, high acidity. Carbonation is moderate. Displays a noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth and a light, drying astringency from the barrel tannins.
