Hitachino Nest Extra High (XH) reimagines the British Brown Ale as a potent, barrel-matured powerhouse. The robust 8% ABV foundation delivers deep layers of toffee and nutty chocolate, intensified by a three-month rest in shochu barrels which imparts a sophisticated distilled spirit nuance and woody depth. The hop profile is distinctive, utilizing Chinook for a firm bittering backbone and Styrian Goldings for a subtle earthy spice that cuts through the rich malt. This extended maturation yields a complex, velvety character where the brewery’s precision meets the warmth of Japanese spirits, resulting in a dark, contemplative, and exceptionally smooth strong ale.
Appearance. Deep reddish-brown to dark mahogany (22 SRM) with excellent clarity despite its strength. Topped by a moderate, creamy tan head with good retention and fine lacing.
Aroma. High intensity malt-driven profile featuring rich toffee, toasted hazelnuts, and light baker's chocolate. The shochu barrel aging contributes a unique spirituous note and subtle oak. Hop character is moderate, with Chinook providing a light piney edge while Styrian Goldings adds a delicate earthy and floral perfume. Low fruity esters of dried plum are present.
Taste. Initial impression is a complex wave of caramel and toasted malt sweetness, quickly followed by nutty and dark cocoa flavors. The shochu influence adds a dry, spirit-like depth to the mid-palate. Bitterness is moderate but firm enough to balance the higher gravity. The finish is medium-dry with a lingering earthy hop flavor from the Styrian Goldings and a clean, warming spirituous aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, almost velvety texture. Carbonation is moderate. A noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, reflecting its high ABV without being harsh or fusel.
