Birra dal colore ambrato carico e dai riflessi bruni dovuta al lungo processo di boiling che provoca una caramellizzazione dei malti britannici Marris Otter e Light Crystal, la Thomas Hardy’s Ale Vintage colpisce immediatamente per il bouquet ricco e complesso in cui spiccano frutta candita, frutta sotto spirito, fichi secchi, tabacco e cioccolato. In bocca risulta corposa e morbida, che richiama a miele, frutta secca e arancia amara. Il finale è lungo, con un amaro accennato e una nota acidula. La complessità di questa Thomas Hardy’s Ale Vintage è impreziosita grazie all’invecchiamento per sei mesi all’interno di botti in legno di quercia, che conferiscono gli aromi dolci e caldi. Una di quelle birre che non possono assolutamente mancare nell’esperienze di qualsiasi amante della buona birra.
Il barley wine è il tradizionale stile britannico noto già dal XVIII secolo, che comprende birre create a partire dalle strong ale brassate per avere una natura vinosa. Il marchio Thomas Hardy’s Ale viene lanciato nel 1968 con la produzione dell’omonima birra prodotta dal birrificio Eldridge Pope, condotto dai Pope già dal 1870; il legame tra la famiglia Pope e il celebre artista spinse i birrai a creare il barley wine dedicato ad Hardy, seguendo la tradizione birraria della città. Nata come birra commemorativa, le Thomas Hardy’s Ale vennero invece incessantemente prodotte per i successivi tre decenni e sino al 1999, quando a causa degli eccessivi costi di produzione il birrificio chiuse i battenti. La produzione riprese tra il 2003 e il 2008 grazie a George Saxon della Phoenix Importers, che incaricò il birrificio O’Hanlon di proseguire la storia di Thomas Hardy’s Ale. Nel 2012 i fratelli Vecchiato di Interbrau acquistarono il marchio e ripresero la produzione, che tutt’ora prosegue floridamente.
