This Black IPA presents a striking contrast between its deep, dark appearance and its vibrant Southern Hemisphere hop profile. The use of Nelson Sauvin hops introduces a sophisticated crushed white grape and gooseberry aroma, while Riwaka contributes intense tropical fruit notes of passionfruit and grapefruit zest. Despite its obsidian hue, the malt character is elegantly restrained, offering subtle hints of cocoa and toasted bread without any harsh acridity or heavy roast. A firm, clean bitterness anchors the experience, leading to a dry finish that highlights the unique New Zealand hop character. It is a modern, hop-forward expression that balances darkness with tropical brightness.

Appearance. Deep obsidian to black in color (SRM 35+). Features a persistent, medium-sized light tan head with fine bubbles and excellent lacing. Though opaque, the beer is clear and free of murkiness.

Aroma. High intensity hop aroma dominated by Nelson Sauvin's white grape, gooseberry, and Riwaka's tropical passionfruit and citrus zest. Low malt support provides a light chocolate and toasted bread background with minimal caramel sweetness. Clean fermentation profile.

Taste. Initial hop-forward impression of grapefruit and tropical fruit, followed by a restrained malt profile of light cocoa and toasted grain. Bitterness is medium-high but smooth, never clashing with the hop flavors. Finishes dry and crisp with a lingering resinous hop and very light roast aftertaste. No burnt or ashy flavors are present.

Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, almost creamy texture. Moderate carbonation provides a gentle lift. A light, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present without being hot, and astringency from the dark malts is very low.
