This Flanders Red Ale presents a masterful convergence of traditional Belgian complexity and long-form maturation. Having rested for over four years in Bourbon barrels, the base beer exhibits deep notes of vanilla and charred oak that intertwine with the sharp, wild acidity characteristic of the style. The addition of Polish blueberries transforms the profile, introducing layers of dark fruit skin and jammy sweetness. It offers a bold, wine-like structure where the rich, toasty malt is punctuated by a persistent lactic tartness and subtle tannic grip, concluding in a dry finish reminiscent of a sophisticated vintage red wine.
Appearance. Deep burgundy to dark purple-red with a slight magenta tint from the blueberries. Generally clear with a thin, fine-beaded, light tan head that shows moderate retention and slight pinkish lacing.
Aroma. High intensity aroma dominated by sharp lactic acidity and rich dark fruits. Intense notes of fresh and jammy blueberries meld with black cherry, plum, and red currant esters. The extended barrel aging contributes clear layers of vanilla, toasted oak, and a faint hint of spirit-derived coconut, supported by a low wild funk and toasty malt.
Taste. Initial impression is a bold, prickly acidity followed by a complex interplay of toasty malt and intense blueberry flavor. Flavors of dark fruit leather and cherries are complemented by vanilla and oak tannins. The sourness is moderate-to-high but balanced by a soft malt richness. The finish is very dry and wine-like with a lingering fruity tartness and no hop flavor.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a notable tannic structure from the fruit skins and 54 months of oak contact. Carbonation is moderate and prickly. Provides a light, pleasant alcohol warmth and a moderate acidic astringency on the palate.
