This Barrel Aged Vietnamese Coffee Stout presents a decadent sensory landscape where the robust roast of an Extra Stout meets a vibrant, fruit-forward complexity. Aromas of freshly pulled espresso and dark chocolate are uplifted by the lush, sun-ripened scent of apricot and fragrant vanilla bean. The palate is velvety and rich, driven by creamy lactose that balances the bold coffee bitterness. Layers of sweet stone fruit emerge mid-sip, supported by a subtle oak-derived depth from the barrel aging process. It concludes with a long, warming finish where residual malt sweetness and juicy fruit notes harmoniously linger.
Appearance. Inky black and opaque (SRM 40+). Pours with a thick, creamy, tan-to-mocha colored head with excellent retention and significant lacing.
Aroma. High intensity. Bold Vietnamese coffee notes of dark chocolate and chicory dominate, layered with a distinct, sweet stone fruit character of ripe apricot. Sweet vanilla and creamy lactose notes follow, with a subtle woody or oaky barrel presence in the background. Hop aroma is absent.
Taste. Initial impression is of rich, sweet espresso and dark cocoa. The mid-palate is remarkably fruit-forward, featuring juicy apricot and a silky, lactose-driven creaminess. Vanilla adds a dessert-like complexity. Bitterness is moderate, derived primarily from roasted grains and coffee rather than hops. The finish is lingering and sweet, with a harmonious blend of fruit and roasted malt.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and viscous with a velvety, creamy texture. Low to moderate carbonation. Noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth. No astringency.
