Drunken Sailor captures the essence of a modern American IPA with a robust structural backbone. It leads with a vibrant hop bouquet of tropical fruits and sharp citrus, driven by the expressive Citra, Cascade, and Simcoe additions. A foundation of Pilsener and Munich malts provides a clean, grainy structure, while a touch of Crystal malt adds a hint of toasted depth to the amber body. The finish is assertive and clean, defined by the firm, resinous bitterness of Herkules hops. It is a balanced yet hop-forward voyage that bridges classic seafaring intensity with contemporary aromatic complexity.
Appearance. Color is medium gold to light reddish-amber (8-12 SRM). Brilliant clarity with a medium-sized, persistent off-white head that leaves significant lacing.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring prominent notes of grapefruit, passion fruit, and resinous pine. Low to medium-low malt presence with clean, bready notes and a hint of toasted grain. Clean fermentation profile with negligible esters.
Taste. Initial hop-forward impression with layers of orange peel, mango, and pine needles. Medium-low malt sweetness from Munich and Crystal malts balances a medium-high bitterness. The mid-palate is grainy and crisp, finishing dry and clean with a lingering, pleasant bitterness and citrus aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly oily texture. Moderate to medium-high carbonation. Very light, well-integrated alcohol warmth with no harshness or astringency.
