This Imperial Stout presents a sensory battleground where deep, roasted malts meet the sharp, resinous edge of Chinook hops. A pitch-black pour gives way to intense aromas of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and an unmistakable piney, grapefruit-led hop character. The vodka-inspired influence manifests as a clean, neutral spirit warmth that cuts through the viscosity, emphasizing the beer’s drying finish. On the palate, the aggressive bitterness of the Chinook hops dominates, clashing with dark grain flavors of licorice and burnt toast. It is a bold, Cold War-themed tribute that balances heavy roast with a surprisingly crisp, punchy hop profile.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (SRM 40+). Large, dense tan head with moderate retention and persistent lacing.
Aroma. High intensity with a rich blend of bittersweet chocolate, heavy roast, and coffee. Strong American hop character of resinous pine and grapefruit from the Chinook additions. Subtle esters of dried black currants and a clean, neutral alcoholic note.
Taste. Initial roasted malt sweetness quickly gives way to charred grain, espresso, and dark chocolate. Mid-palate features assertive Chinook hop flavor with resinous and piney qualities. Bitterness is medium-high to aggressive, leading to a fairly dry finish with lingering notes of roasted barley and a clean warmth.
