Brewing Bears India Bear Ale
India Bear Ale is a quintessential American IPA that showcases a classic trio of hops. The sensory journey is led by Columbus, providing a sharp, resinous pungency and herbal depth. Chinook adds distinct notes of grapefruit peel and woodsy pine, while Centennial rounds out the profile with bright floral aromas and lemon zest. A supportive, light-toast malt backbone provides just enough structure to balance the assertive bitterness without detracting from the hop intensity. It finishes crisp and dry, leaving a lingering trail of citrus oils and evergreen needles on the palate, embodying a bold, hop-forward character with a clean, well-attenuated fermentation profile.
Appearance. Medium gold to light reddish-amber (approx. 8–11 SRM). Clear with a medium-sized, off-white head that demonstrates good persistence and leaves significant lacing.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring prominent notes of resinous pine, earthy spice, and pungent grapefruit. A low, clean, grainy-sweet malt character supports the hop presentation. The fermentation profile is clean with negligible esters.
Taste. Immediate, high hop flavor echoing the aroma's pine and citrus zest. Bitterness is firm and medium-high, cutting through a low, bready malt presence. The finish is dry to medium-dry, leaving a lingering, hoppy, and pleasantly bitter aftertaste with no harshness.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light to medium body with a smooth, slightly oily texture. Carbonation is medium-high, and there is a very light, smooth alcohol warmth appropriate for the strength.
