BrewDog Albino Squid Assassin
This assertive Red Rye IPA showcases a complex collision of pungent hops and a multi-layered malt backbone. Bold aromas of zesty grapefruit from Citra and robust, resinous pine from Chinook lead the sensory experience. The malt bill, featuring Extra Pale, Crystal, and Dark Crystal, delivers deep layers of toasty caramel and cinder toffee. A significant addition of Rye malt contributes a distinctive peppery spiciness, while a touch of Carafa malt adds a sophisticated cacao richness without harsh roast. The result is a balanced yet intense Specialty IPA that marries high bitterness with a smooth, lingering finish and a vibrant ruby-hued complexity.
Appearance. Deep ruby-brown to mahogany (22-30 SRM). Topped with a dense, persistent light tan head that leaves significant lacing. Generally clear with brilliant garnet highlights when held to light.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma dominated by citrus zest, lime, and heavy resinous pine. The malt presence is moderate to high, characterized by spicy rye, toasted bread, and a rich toffee sweetness. Very low chocolate notes and clean fermentation with minimal esters.
Taste. Initial impression is a punch of citrus and piney hop flavors. The mid-palate is defined by spicy rye grain and a complex sweetness of caramel and burnt sugar. Low levels of unsweetened cacao provide a dry depth. High bitterness is firm and clean, leading into a dry, spicy finish with a lingering resinous and slightly toasted aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a slight oily silkiness attributed to the rye content. Moderate carbonation provides a crisp edge. A noticeable but pleasant alcohol warmth is present, well-integrated into the finish with no harsh astringency.
