Bizarre Skies of Red Triticale Altbier Can

This Altbier presents a unique twist with a rustic grain bill featuring Pilsner malts, Munich malt, and specialized triticale. The pale and caramelized triticale layers provide a deep, toasted bread crust and nutty foundation, while debittered black malt adds a rich copper hue without harshness. Cool open fermentation with a house Kölsch strain ensures a crisp, clean profile. The hop bouquet is refined and complex, blending the spicy, floral notes of Hallertau Mittelfrüh and Czech Saaz with the earthy, herbal elegance of East Kent Goldings. It finishes firm and dry, balancing traditional Düsseldorf-style bitterness with modern artisanal grain complexity.
Appearance. Deep copper to bronze with brilliant clarity. Features a thick, creamy, long-lasting off-white head with excellent lacing (SRM 14-16).
Aroma. Moderately high malt intensity characterized by rich, baked bread, toasted nuts, and a unique grainy earthiness from the triticale. Hop aroma is moderate, showing a sophisticated blend of spicy, floral, and herbal notes. Fermentation is exceptionally clean with only a hint of pomme fruit esters; no roasted or chocolate notes are present.
Taste. Initial impression is a firm, clean bitterness that immediately yields to a rich, complex malt backbone. Flavors of toasted bread crust and nutty triticale are prominent, balanced by spicy Hallertau Mittelfrüh and earthy East Kent Goldings hop flavors. Bitterness is assertive but well-integrated (approx. 40 IBU). The finish is remarkably dry and clean with a refined, grainy aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a very smooth, creamy texture. Carbonation is medium-high, providing a crisp, refreshing bite. Alcohol warmth is light and well-hidden. No detectable astringency.
