This elevated English Porter delivers a deeply comforting, unctuous sensory experience inspired by crisp autumn evenings. Brewed with amplified quantities of crystal malt and chocolate malt, it opens with a rich tapestry of bittersweet cocoa, warm espresso, and toasted nuts, accented by a faint, evocative whisper of woodsmoke reminiscent of glowing embers. A velvety malt backbone grounds the beer, while gentle English yeast esters of dark plum and dried fig weave through the dark chocolate core. Beautifully balanced and warming at 7.2% ABV, it finishes with a cozy, lingering toastiness that wraps around the palate like a heavy wool sweater.
Appearance. Deep dark brown to nearly black (28-35 SRM) with brilliant ruby highlights at the edges. It is topped by a thick, creamy, tan head that exhibits excellent retention and leaves dense, sheet-like lacing on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity. The aroma is dominated by rich notes of dark cocoa, toasted hazelnuts, and sweet toffee from the heavy crystal and chocolate malts, accented by a rustic, comforting hint of autumn woodsmoke. Low earthy hop notes and moderate fruity esters of dried plum and cherry round out the profile, with no diacetyl.
Taste. Smooth and rich initial impression. Generous flavors of bittersweet chocolate, caramel, and lightly roasted coffee beans take center stage, balanced by a subtle, sweet, smoky character without any harsh, burnt acridity. Hop flavor is very low and earthy, with a medium-low bitterness that perfectly counterbalances the luxurious malt sweetness. The finish is off-dry and velvety, leaving a lingering, warming aftertaste of dark chocolate and toasted nuts.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full to full body with an unctuous, velvety texture. Carbonation is moderate, contributing to a smooth and creamy mouthfeel. A gentle, comforting alcohol warmth is present, well-integrated into the rich body with absolutely no harshness or astringency.
