Ballykilcavan Blackwell Stout is an approachable Irish Stout that highlights the brewery’s own roasted barley. On the nose, moderate aromas of freshly ground coffee and dark cocoa dominate, with a clear roasted grain presence. The palate follows with deep flavors of bittersweet chocolate and unsweetened espresso, balanced by a medium-high bitterness. A unique, subtle note of warm spice emerges in the finish, adding complexity to the traditional roasty dryness. This jet-black beer pours with a dense tan head and offers a smooth, medium-bodied mouthfeel that is remarkably easy-going, making it a quintessentially sessionable example of the style.

Appearance. Jet black with deep ruby highlights when held to the light; opaque. Pours with a thick, persistent, creamy tan-colored head that leaves fine lacing on the glass.

Aroma. Moderate intensity featuring dominant notes of roasted coffee and dark chocolate. Secondary aromas of toasted grain and a hint of earthy hops. Fermentation esters are very low.

Taste. Initial impression of sharp roasted grain, quickly giving way to bittersweet chocolate and cold-brew coffee flavors. A medium-high bitterness provides structure, leading to a dry, clean finish. A faint, unique warm spice note lingers alongside the roasted character in the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel. Medium-light to medium body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate. Displays very low grain-derived astringency and no alcohol warmth.
