Rothaus Pils Tannenzäpfle has existed since 1956—so for over 60 years. Its unusual name is embodied on the labels of the 0.33 l bottles. Just as today, the original Tannenzäpfle labels depicted spruce-fir branches accompanied by pinecones. These pinecones are what gave this beer its name.

But there’s one other characteristic that makes the Tannenzäpfle special; it was the first Rothaus beer to emerge with a label depicting “Biergit”, the Black Forest girl holding two glasses of beer. Today, “Biergit” is the defining symbol for all beers made by the Rothaus Brewery.

Today, Rothaus is accredited as one of the most successful breweries in Germany, largely due to the high quality of their products.

Tannenzäpfle (“pine cones”) pilsner has a bit of a cult following among many beer lovers in Germany, and after sampling it it’s easy for us to see why. Pouring a bright golden-straw color with crystal clarity and a cap of just-off-white foam, it looks inviting in the glass, but it’s the aroma that really drew us in. It’s got the classic German pilsner notes: an underlying base of pale malt overlaid with brightly earthy, grassy, and...
