Schwarzer is a monumental double dark ale from Anchorage Brewing Company that bridges the gap between a robust British Brown Ale and a massive Imperial Stout. Aged for 19 months in a sophisticated blend of Willett rye and 15-year 1792 Calumet Farms bourbon barrels, the beer presents an immense sensory profile. The malt architecture is defined by deep layers of toffee, nutty sweetness, and caramel, characteristic of its base style but amplified to an extraordinary 16% ABV. The barrel treatment introduces sharp rye spice and lush vanilla, while the long maturation contributes complex notes of dried dark fruits and mellowed oak tannins.

Appearance. Deep, dark reddish-brown to nearly opaque ebony; features a low, dense, light tan head with poor retention due to high alcohol content, leaving thick, oily legs on the glass.

Aroma. High intensity with a complex malt core of sweet toffee, toasted hazelnuts, and light chocolate; heavy barrel influence provides scents of spicy rye, vanilla, and charred oak; subtle fruity esters of raisin and plum emerge as it warms.
