Althaia Mascarat is a sophisticated Black Rye IPA that masterfully balances assertive hop intensity with a restrained, dark malt backbone. It presents a striking appearance with its deep black color and persistent, cinnamon-hued foam. The aroma provides a vivid contrast, layering resinous pine and bright citrus hop notes over a soft veil of milk chocolate and light toast. On the palate, the inclusion of rye lends a distinctive peppery spiciness and a subtle graininess that sharpens the dry finish. Despite its obsidian hue, the profile remains exceptionally drinkable, emphasizing hop freshness and firm bitterness over heavy roast, resulting in a clean, lingering finish with integrated alcohol warmth.
Appearance. Black (35-40 SRM); opaque. Topped with a creamy, persistent, cinnamon-colored head that leaves consistent lacing.
Aroma. Moderate to high intensity hop aroma featuring distinct resinous, piney, and citrusy characters. This is balanced by low to moderate malt notes of soft chocolate, toast, and a hint of coffee. Low spicy rye notes are present, with a clean fermentation profile.
Taste. Leading with citrus and pine hop flavors, the palate transition into smooth chocolate and toasted malt notes without any burnt or ashy harshness. The rye contributes a noticeable peppery spice that complements the medium-high bitterness. It finishes dry and clean with a lingering hop resin and light roasted aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a slight creaminess and a hint of rye-driven texture. Moderate carbonation. A subtle, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present without any astringency from the dark malts.
