Adalt Brewing Blackstar
Adalt Brewing’s Blackstar is a complex reimagining of an American Stout, expertly infused with the aromatic intensity of a Chai Milk Stout. The sensory profile is defined by a vivid tapestry of ginger, cardamom, and cinnamon that weaves through a robust foundation of roasted dark chocolate and espresso. Vanilla and nutmeg provide a softening sweetness, while clove adds a subtle earthy depth. Despite its moderate 5.1% ABV, the beer presents a luxurious, creamy texture characteristic of the milk stout influence. This richness is balanced by a firm American hop bitterness and faint resinous notes, resulting in a harmonious, spice-forward finish.
Appearance. Jet black and entirely opaque (SRM 38). It supports a large, persistent, light-tan head with excellent retention and thick, decorative lacing.
Aroma. High intensity spice aroma dominated by pungent ginger, floral cardamom, and warm cinnamon. This is backed by a moderate roasted malt character featuring dark chocolate and charred grain. Very low resinous hop aroma is present, and the vanilla addition provides a subtle, sweet rounding effect.
Taste. Initial impression is a balance of creamy sweetness and sharp spice. Rich flavors of bittersweet chocolate and roasted coffee beans are layered with clove, nutmeg, and ginger. The bitterness is moderate to high but smoothed by lactose, while low citrusy hop flavors emerge mid-palate. The finish is medium-dry with a lingering, spiced aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a notably creamy and silky mouthfeel. Carbonation is moderate to high, providing a slight lift to the spice profile. Alcohol warmth is very low and smooth, with no roast-derived astringency.
