Reflecting the dark thematic of the 'Famine' horseman, it leads with an aroma of resinous pine and citrus, yet unexpectedly unveils layers of roasted coffee and sweet chocolate. The palate is defined by a medium-high bitterness that persists alongside a creamy sweetness from non-fermentable sugars. This 7.6% ABV ale maintains the style's signature dryish finish while supporting a heavy-handed dark malts and toasted malts presence, resulting in a complex, bitter, and chocolate-infused sensory journey.
Appearance. Deep reddish-amber to copper (14 SRM), appearing quite dark for the style. Displays slight haze with a medium-sized, persistent off-white head and moderate lacing.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring prominent citrus and resinous pine. This is layered over an atypical, moderate character of roasted coffee and sweet chocolate. Clean fermentation profile with a light, grainy malt backbone.
Taste. Initial impression is hop-forward with high bitterness (approx. 60 IBU) showing grapefruit and pine. This is balanced by unexpected flavors of dark cocoa and toasted coffee. A creamy, non-fermentable sugar sweetness provides a counterpoint to the bitter, dryish finish. The aftertaste lingers with a blend of hop resin and toasted malts.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate. A noticeable, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, reflecting the 7.6% ABV without being harsh.
